"meem" and "alef" are no more often used in arabic words than "a" and
"e" in English. You're trading ease of use with a highly complicated
(for normal end users) form of abbreviating words, to avoid using
those two often used letters.
You'll make it too ununderstable by not using the first letters. In
fact, you will lose the appeal of abbreviations, since they will not
be easily recognised any more. A normal user will not try to figure
out where the abbreviations came from, and it will not be easily
rememberable. I haven't seen the practice anywhere to be honest.

Abbreviating from the first letter in Arabic is problematic. Because often the
first letter is م, ا .... Arabic is a derivative language (Root+derivations)
unlike English or French (Radical+affixes) . Therefore it would be better to
use the first letter of the root, ex:
مدير => دار => د
عرض => عرض => ع
غنوم => غنوم => غ
د.ع.غ
But since Abbreviations may seem strange to Arabic speakers, it would be good
to keep the long form and then convert to Abbreviations if the open source
culture gets more established in Arabs minds.
