Thanks for your reply, i half thought my email didn't make it through the mailing list or something.

I have checked out gnome, installed gTranslator, found myself a file that was not assigned, but gtranslator tells me there is a syntax error about quite a lot of gnome/desktop's PO files, although msgfmt -c --statistics filename.po doesn't. is that gTranslator's fault or is there something else i might have missed?

You are more than welcome. There are many things to work on, and contributors
are more than needed: KDE, Gnome, Debian, Mozilla, OpenOffice ...
As KDE and Gnome maintainer here is the way to join:
- Read Arabeyes Translation Guide and CVS how to in www.arabeyes.org
- Register to doc at arabeyes dot org (http://lists.arabeyes.org)
- For:
        * Gnome:
        cvs checkout translate/gnome
        Read the ASSIGNED file
        Pick a file or files that is not ASSIGNED in translate/gnome
        Announce in the list that you work on this file
        Translate it
        Send it to me (chahibiعgmail dot com)
        After that ask for a CVS account (as in the CVS guide)

        * KDE
        cvs checkout translate/kde
        Work on extragear-graphics as it is not assigned to anyone, if you want to
work on another modules ask in the list before
        Announce in the list that you work on this module
        Translate what you can
        Send it to me (chahibiعgmail dot com)
        After that ask for a CVS account (as in the CVS guide)
