Re: Coordinator Expectations

Salam Hicham,

I don't think Nadim is dictating anything. Nadim is suggesting a plan of work, and I think this is what is expected to happen in a an Open Source Community, based on volunteer work but also and aboveall on democracy.

I think Nadim's email is right to the point and it would have been better to discuss it if you had any comments rather than take it personally.

I also share Nadim's point of view and I WANT to work on translation. I think, in my humble opinion that the urgent thing to do now is to share the tasks in the very coming days. I don't want to start translating files randomly without a precise goal and I think that this point of view is at least shared by Mohamed Aser too http://lists.arabeyes.org/archives/doc/2003/January/msg00032.html . I am sorry to say this, but I am still waiting for your message that you said you will post (http://lists.arabeyes.org/archives/doc/2003/January/msg00053.html) and you said also that the start of this week was a deadline to wait for more people and then define people's work. Well, we are almost at the end of the week Hicham ! I think people who'd like to work on KDE are you, Mohamed Aser and I (Maybe also Nuridin Aminagha if I understand by the cvs mail, though he didn't explicitly say it). I think that it will be easy to assign tasks if newcomers will show after we start the work.

OK, this is my point of view and I hope you will discuss it constructively rather than being offended :-) I have no personal issues and this is an open community after all.

Last week there was a one month deadline, a week later is only three weeks...

Salam,

Youcef.

I don't accept that other poeple not working in the tranlsation process dictate what I must or not do.

A number of people have asked about the status and future plans of
KDE and Gnome translations now that Isam is no longer the coordinator
of those projects (Isam should be commanded for building the foundation
on which future work will build upon - he'll still be around for quickie
help and he's promised a procedure document on Gnome soon).

In short - here are some important facts,

+ Mr. Hicham Amaoui is taking over the KDE coordination
+ Mr. Arafat Medini is taking over the Gnome coordination

What does all this mean to you ? Well it depends on who 'you' is :-)

For Hicham and Arafat that means added responsibility and more work
(beyond their translation duties - yup, they will continue to translate
and to double-check done work, etc). Hicham and Arafat are going to
be asked the following (ie. they will be expected to ...),

 1. Assess current and future capabilities of the people present and
their commitment level (know what volunteers will accomplish and
make a distinction between the guy/gal putting 30-hours aweek vs.
the one putting 2-hours). This assessment is to be revisited at
    least once a month.

 2. Set a plan in motion detailing how the intended work will be
completed with the current man-power (or lack thereof). The
plan is to be revisited and refined once a month.
    a. The plan will note priority of files (which ones need to
       be translated first)
    b. The plan will divide up the work so that if/when people
volunteer they can hit the ground running and know what to
tackle and what not to touch
    c. The plan will also note milestones that should be met to
account for the project deadlines (ie. KDE-3.2 or Gnome-2.4
       releases, etc)
    d. The plan will conclude with a schedule of tasks (broadly)

*NOTE: please have your plans ready within a week so that work
can commence (and tasts divided-up) in earnest.

 3. Keep the respective webpages (on arabeyes) upto date with regards
to info and priorities as well as status

 4. Status will be sent to the 'doc' list once a month (exact date
to be specified later and it would be ideal to have both KDE
and Gnome coordinators follow the same status dates). The status
file will be of the following format (to ease reading),

Done past month (Jan 2003 - Feb 2003):
      + did this
      + did that

Todo next month (Feb 2003 - March 2003):
      + finish this
      + start on that

      Issues/Concerns/Deadlines:
+ Need a script for this
+ Need CVS account for that
+ Deadline: KDE release on May 6, 2003

 5. To publicly recruit for their respective projects. The coordinators
main tasks beyond planning, executing and formulating a path to
success will be to staff their teams. This means the coordinators
will be asked to recruit people to help them (this means they'll be
expected to post solicitations on various sites for help and for
people's assistance). Coordinators are also responsible for
motivating their staff and making life interesting for them :-)

Hope this clarifies things for those that thought we were off-track
(we're not :-) and we all really hope to see more progress due to
these upcoming changes.

Salam.

- Nadim
