Hi, About a year ago some work started for arabizing the debian.org web site, and I remember there were discussions very similar to these. Back then someone pointed to a Microsoft-supplied lexicon, I have looked for it but couldn't find it yet. I'll keep searching and report any success. Maybe people subscribed to this list have heard of that lexicon.. Chahine, do you remember anything of that kind?
Salam Imed, all,
Yes, Imed, it's all old stuff;)
Here: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/developr/msdn/newup/glossary/
It's full of junk though (translated sentences from Microsoft software),
so it needs some cleaning, because what's needed is the terminology that's
there. From an unfinished experience, I can tell you that cleaning
those bases take about 1 hour for every 1000 lines. At the time, for
Win95 and Office97, there were about 32000 lines.
It also has some translations that are as understandable as Chinese
to an Arab. *Please* avoid things like "QarS MaDghoot" for CD (as wierd
as it might sound, sedee is okay, coz everyone understands it). Read the
paper on arabeyes.org (Mohamed, the link is still not on the site).
Better, for practical reasons, if a Microsoft translation takes more
than one word, simply ask for a replacement on this list (or people will
dismiss it in practice).
If the CSV files delivered by Microsoft are cleaned and translated
to Arabic where Microsoft thought we are Chinese, they could become an
(un)official computer terminology.
