Re: Developer Digest, Vol 24, Issue 4

Asslamu Alaikum,

I've recently been using JQuran (with very slight modifications) to develop a web-based Quran in J2EE. I've done some preliminary work like creating web components and custom JSP Quran tag libraries with which I've implemented a simple multinlingual Quran browser. My intention is to provide an extensible framework with features like browsing, searching, web services, user bookmarks and notes, categories, audio, etc. However, I'm unsure if JQuran itself is outdated at the moment. If it is, I can help updating it, but I can't seem to find the current libquran "spec", something like the INSTALL file that provides/implies the language packs' xml schema, file naming conventions, etc. Let me know if I can help out with the project.

JazakumAllah Khair,
Farooq Ali

Dear Youssef,
In Quran project page, you can see my name as one of the contributor.
However, as far as I know, we cannot get hold of the project leader at
the moment, Mr Yousif.I contributed to the project only in Quran text,
font (which has my name), and PDF files only. I'm not the software
developer. I think no one is working on the program itself. Maybe
Nadim can say something about this.

Personally, I think we need someone to be working on the software. We
might want to redesign the whole thing. However, as I mentioned before,
I'm not the software developer, so I can't really take the lead.

Current the software does not come with my updated text, which is more
or less complete. I think the software cannot work well with the text
because of the font issues. We really need a good coordination to get
things done. If you want to do something about it, maybe we can work
on something.

Regards.

alsalam 3alaikum,
i have done a lot with the libquran library even though my name is not
on the
contributor's page (fixed some bugs in it, used it to develop the
transliteration
search engine if you guys remember that).

i have a question and a comment - i'll start with the comment, that
saying that
i would be willing to work on a version of software using libquran,
however, i'd
prefer to do something with gtk since i already know it a little bit
(whereas i
haven't really done much with qt). so i would work on gtk version of
quran rather
than the qt one... however, i'd like some suggestions, especially in
terms of the
user interface... if i can get these suggestions, i'd be more than
happy to work on
a gtk version insha'Allah.

the question i have is as to how different the updated xmls are from the
original
arabic xml... like besides splitting it up into 114 files, were things
really found to
be wrong (i am asking because i am using the original arabic xml file in
some websites
and in this case, they need to be updated (?)).

jazakumAllah khair,
wsalam 3alaikum,

Hi Ahmed,

Thanks for your interest to develop the Quran project further.
It is really too bad that you can not develop the QtQuran further. I made an
experimental interface for QtQuran couple of years ago, but never finished
it. It would be nice, if someone can finish it.
I can always give you suggestions about developing an interface for GTK
quran. Take a look at the QtQuran interface I made first. We can always make
an appointment on IRC and discuss about it.
