Not sure that blocking open relays will prevent cases like the recent one. ie:
someone can spoof your email using his ISP's SMTP server (which is not an
open relay) and it seems that's what happened :-)
However, if we can block open relays it would be great. It may prevent the
lists from receiving automatically viruses and worms from those relays on
behalf of a subscriber (which may cause some disasters for those who think
the email comes from a friend).
For example, I recently received a virus from biku ;-)) [but that one was sent
directly to me and not via a mailing list]. If I was using Wintoz and I
believed it was really sent by biku it may have caused a disaster...
Another example, I am subscribed to Mandrake's i18n mailing list. We recently
received a virus 'on behalf' of Pablo* :-) Someone on the list said that now
viruses are using AI...
So this is a common problem and happens even to those more experienced than
us. But if we can fix it it would be great.
(*) The coordinator of Mandrake's i18n.
