Just a 2c opinion..
I used to use NMAP
(http://www.insecure.org/nmap/index.html) and still
most of the time.
When I checked Nessus though, I found many _really_
powerful options:
* Relatively easy setup/use.
* Many supported hardware and software tests
available.
* Plug-in system.
* Excellent detailed reporting with charts, that can
be exported to multiple file types.
.. and many others.
