Out of the three (could there be more options ?) I'd vote for #2.  The
inclusion of that style="somestyle" could be done in PHP upon pressing
of submit (ie. have the PHP code scan for href and see if the style
tag is there, if not add it).

I'm not sure how other sites do it, but I've seen many instances where
the href is different on pages depending on where you are - I guess
they all resort to the style= call.  I'm no HTML guy, but on our right
menu we have links that have the underscore show-up upon hover -- I'm
guessing that is specific per table and not link (class related).  Could 
something similar (but with regard to color only) be done for the left
menu ?
