the ligatures problem will be resolved with gnome 2.6; you'll not get
any broken word again after adding a haraka when 2.6 comes out ;) so
don't worry it's not a font problem.
As you are a gnome user please wait for gnome 2.6 :) You'll get 100%
Arabic support in it, with Abiword being also in Arabic you'll have some
nice tools to play with!
