Doesn't sound like its expected, but then again I'm not an Akka user.

That extension along with .zip and/or .gz are noting that the file is
compressed.  You'll need to uncompress them after you download them to
your machine.  There is plenty of info on how to do this easy step on
the internet (google is your friend :-), here's one that spells it out,

NOTE: this is _not_ specific to any distro - these are basic file management
      issues that are inherit to all linux/unix flavors out there.
