I'm honored by your description of GNU. I'd like to clarify one point:
The more experienced among us might also
want to give the GNU/Hurd a try, it's GNU's official OS, which is still
experimental but is technologically superior to more common free OSs.
It's possibly confusing to say "GNU's official OS", because GNU *is*
an OS. The GNU Project is the project to develop GNU, the operating
system.
GNU/Linux is the version of GNU that uses Linux as the kernel. GNU
itself uses the Hurd as the kernel. But we sometimes call it
"GNU/Hurd" instead of just "GNU", to contrast it with GNU/Linux.
So GNU/Hurd is the version of GNU that uses the Hurd as the kernel.
