Hello, This mail is sent to all people I remember having expressed some interest in localisation for right-to-left languages, most often in Debian Installer....but more generally in Debian. As we probably now all know, Steve Langasek, who now should be able to travel freely with his wife in all countries with right-to-left languages, has implemented BiDi support in the needed libraries so that Debian Installer and all slang-based text user interfaces in Debian, can properly display RTL languages (including Arabic shaping). So, we are now at a moment where real l10n work for RTL languages may really start. The i18n is done (which means our applications are ready to be translated) and thus the l10n work (the real translation work) may be started. Indeed, it has already been started for Arabic and Hebrew...and interest has been, expressed for Farsi. I also expect to get something for Urdu and maybe other languages in Indian subcontinent....(those which are RTL....I'm not a linguist!!!). For this, we now need some place all people interested in this may gather and discuss, just like the french/italian/spanish/whatever translators do. We have two options: -one single mailing list, named debian-l10n-bidi, where all people working on i18n/l10n for BiDi languages could work together -dedicated debian-l10n-arabic, debian-l10n-hebrew, debian-l10n-farsi....mailing lists for specific discussions about these languages Indeed, probably both are needed : work on bidi support probably needs to be completed now and thus, even though dedicated ML exist, a central ML for bidi stuff would be useful even if specialised ML exist. On the other hand, Debian mailin list are supposed to be proposed only whena real interest exists, not only when potential interest exists.... So, I propose that I ask for the creation of a debian-l10n-bidi mailing list first...so that we/you have a first place to work on....using it also for your translation work. When this list will be a bit overwhelmed by specific translation topics for Arabic, Hebrew, Farsi....then we will ask for debian-l10n-{arabic,hebrew,farsi} What is your feeling about this? Please keep the general CC when answering....unless someone explicitely asks for being removed from it, of course. --
