Hi,
UTF-8 is an encoding of Unicode. Unicode per se is an abstract character
set and can be either represented by plain 16-bit values or as UTF-8
one-byte or two-byte values.
The nicety about UTF-8 is that it's compatible with ASCI, that is ASCII
characters have the same one-byte representation in ASCII and UTF-8.
Besides ASCII characters stored in Unicode in the UTF-8 encoding take
only one byte per character.
UTF-8 is for Unicode what gzip can be for HTTP content.
