I guess shaping with gnome-terminal is not that easy, I'll tell you somethin
from my private agenda ;-)
IIRC, gnome-terminal "zvt actually which is the terminal widget" draws the letters
letter by letter without considering the surrounding characters.

I can't really remember the details as I had a look at it a year ago.

I guess it needs deep hacking to let it work.

Personally, I use mlterm and 'm satisfied.
