"Project Proposal
"Nearly everybody has a mobile phone!"
Introduction
My project proposal for the final year project is the investigation into and production of a "prayer and fasting time Information Application" program, which the user will be able to view and set alarms to notify them of payer time as well as time for breaking fast. The program will be created for the use on mobile phones.
Scope
The project is potentially quite a large piece of work, and it is difficult to state categorically what will be feasible within the limited time period available to me. Rather than define absolutely what my "deliverables" are, I propose to produce a prioritised list of deliverables, and I will attempt to produce what is possible in the time frame of the third year project. I hope to treat this project, as merely the first part of a piece of work that will, I believe, be genuinely useful for our day to day life and in a wide range of situations.
The Problem
One of the challenges Muslims face living in the west is the inability to hear the "Azan" (calling to pray) from the mosque very loud so we know when to pray. This is considered noise pollution. Praying five times a day, it is very hard to know when exactly to pray as the prayer time varies everyday. In my personal opinion being a Muslim myself there is desperate need for this innovation and the demand for this is also very high.
The testing product
My product covers the needs of prayer and fasting timetable. It will be designed especially for mobile phones; this is because everyone now has a mobile phone also there is demand for this innovation. My product will be designed as an application which can be uploaded on a mobile phone; this product will function in a similar way as a Calender would on Mobile Phones.
It will be designed so that when the user can select the present and a future date to view the prayer times and also activate an alarm for desired prayer time or all of the daily five prayers. It will also have a function for the month of Ramadan (opening and closing fast), which will calculate it for each year as it follows the lunar calendar.
Distinctive features of the proposed product!
- It can be accessed at all time.
- No internet connection needed.
- No subscription needed.
- No need to update every year.
- Carry it with you at all time!
- No hassle.
- Application saved on the phone memory.
The Deliverables
In the long term, I would like to produce a comprehensive solution to the problem of being aware of the exact time to pray, but in the meantime herewith is a list of various deliverables, with their priorities. The minimum set of deliverables should incorporate priorities 1 to 5, but I hope to achieve everything else on the list (and any thing else revealed in the course of the project) in due course.

Comments
1
A comprehensive piece of research on the appropriate technologies of java, dot net etc programming and mobile phone software.
Also research into the calculations of prayer times and lunar calendar.
I expect to produce the majority of this research in time for the interim report.
2
A study into people's needs and desires for this kind of technology
I hope to produce a study by interviewing a range of potential users in time for the interim report, and will also carry out a thorough literature search.
3
A prototype phone based application.
4
Testing
5
An actual product
Initial research into such devices by the interim report, further research at a later date.
