The problem w/ Pango is its gtk dependence. For a lot of applications,
gtk is not an option (take for example, AbiWord).

I agree (but with exceptions!). Other than the fact that FriBiDi
complies (as best as possible) w/ the UAX#9, its other most-attractive
feature is its lightweight. 

But one might want to consider that if you are looking into having BiDi
support, you probably want to be able to display RTL lanaguages.. and if
you want Arabic, you want shaping/joining.
