I'm not too familiar with all this stuff, but can't something along
the lines of XDrawLine, XDrawRectangle and friends be used ?  I've
seen a number of utf-8 supporting applications go this route.

I'll read-up on this stuff once I get a bit of time -- thanks for
the link.
