I'm 100% with you but the problem is that most apps (vim..etc) use 
motif/lesstif , I'm sure most ppl have that toolkit because it's used widely 
for a lot of unix apps.
Motif/Lesstif already has RTL support (we don't need fribidi ;) but 
unfortunately it doesn't have utf-8 support (vim 'draws' the strings on a 
xmDrawingAreaWidgetClass rather than using some text widget)

and this left us to only two choice , the first is using plugins for various 
tks as M.Sammer noted , the second is statically linking it with the 
libraries we will use for it.
