I'm honored by your description of GNU.  I'd like to clarify one point:

    want to give the GNU/Hurd a try, it's GNU's official OS, which is still
    experimental but is technologically superior to more common free OSs.

It's possibly confusing to say "GNU's official OS", because GNU *is*
an OS.  The GNU Project is the project to develop GNU, the operating
system.

GNU/Linux is the version of GNU that uses Linux as the kernel.  GNU
itself uses the Hurd as the kernel.  But we sometimes call it
"GNU/Hurd" instead of just "GNU", to contrast it with GNU/Linux.
So GNU/Hurd is the version of GNU that uses the Hurd as the kernel.
