I believe pango can not simply be plugged into the current version of
GTK2.x you must also upgrade GTK which means... alot of compiling this
is what I remember reading but not sure so do some googling and see.
If you are running an RPM distro , try www.rpmfind.net and search for it
there.... (I found 42 version including the latest release :)).
