eDara and Task Management

Salam,

eDara has been 'conceived' since Jan. 16, 2002. Since then,
no substantial work has been put into it. Several people
at different intervals have expressed interest in taking
the project on. Of all the people who have expressed interest,
only 2 (Hatem and M. Yousif) have committed any files
to CVS. All commits were more of skeletal attributes than
actual concrete modules.

The idea of eDara was that it would be a modular project
that can achieve quick results (quick releases, etc) and so
it would boost morale and get those sitting on the fence
with their feet wet. That approach did not work, neither did
I think it ever would.

There are several products (free and open) out there which
would perform the same tasks that eDara would have. It is
my opinion that Arabeyes does not need such a management
system at this point. I have experimented with several
of them, and the only one that was semi-satisfactory was
phpGroupWare. Still, it did not seem like a needed step.

The idea of such a system is so Arabeyes members can share
information and know what every other member is working
on. Unfortunately, not everyone in Arabeyes is willing
to operate in such a mode.

I have also done some research on what other, even larger
scale projects do to manage tasks and volunteers. The
answer has consistently been simple: mailing-lists and
a bug-tracking system. Well, we have both.

As for eDara, and since it has been there since January,
I am giving it a ONE week grace period for someone to make
a _serious_ attempt at taking it over. I understand if
you are 'interested', but we are not looking for interest
only. Dedication, commitment, _and_ most importantly time.

I will not be deploying a task-management system on
Arabeyes. So far this whole subject has proven to be a
waste of my time - and since I spend at least 4-6 hours
a day working on Arabeyes related issues, it is also
a waste of Arabeyes' time.

Thank you.
