Salam Arabeyes developers, Though I have some problems with my network at the U of K (resulting in instantaneous learning of PIX configuration), I would like to mention a few points: 1. Arabic support for the Linux console There are some differing opinions in this, but I am inclined to include it as I heavily use the text interface. (i.e. less than hard requirement) 2. Good Arabic fonts I am aware of the Khotot project and would like it to be packaged for RedHat, I definitely will push for this and (given some time) may help. Certainly the best available option. >> 3. The ability to read and write Arabic in KDE and GNOME (may be other >> window managers later). >I think that is native to those applications given the keyboard and >locale >files are included (which I'm assuming they are -- testing needs to >happen >to guarantee that fact). 3. I have to state that Red Hat has not for the period before made any commitments to include the raw KDE/GNOME in its distribution and not regarded Arabic as important before this release. (I am sure some of the Arabic Red Hat Linux users will testify to this). Things are now better though. 4. Localization of the installation program (Red Hat Anaconda) should take place. While I encourage this I am giving it the least priority. This is a totally subjective decision and should not stop another person from seeing this. 5. Akka packaging is more difficult than initially imagined. Yes, it took me more than a day. Actually akka is in a good shape but some points need to be enhanced. The problem is in the akka client, which I think I will surmount in the following days, given the help of Chahine and others. I have just installed RH 10 beta, and my first impression that it does better support for other languages by supporting UTF-8 more. I have just used GNOME, and they seem to include some Arabic fonts, but shaping is not there (letters are not linked), which I supposed was solved in the GNOME. Fribidi and kde-i18n-Arabic are already there. As for the lists, I am going to continue any feed back to the project through the 'general' list. That doesn't say I won't bug you here with messages about Akka and the like.. After some days I will be able to put up a page for this endeavour, so I will make use of the ArabEyes distro page. I will contact you (Nadim) for that.. Thanks everybody and let's keep the good work! k -- Muhammad Abdulmuneim Alkarouri Teaching Assistant Dept. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Faculty of Engineering and Architecture University of Khartoum Khartoum, Sudan
