From the Gtk manual:
If you have the Xft library, you can turn on anti-aliased fonts by setting the GDK_USE_XFT environment variable. 
GDK_USE_XFT=1
I think i've heard about a problem with anti-aliased fonts in Arabic "when scaling some fonts"
i'm not sure about this or where i heard this!
