The widget mirroring feature doesn't work very well, so I disabled it. (translating a string in gtk+.po to RTL or LTR).

So it's already there. Eases my mind.

The mirroring support in Gtk+ is the best support I have ever seen (well, I don't know how well (ot how bad) latest Windows and MacOS do); but it is still not perfect.

Have you seen arabic support in Qt/KDE3? I think it's perfect :-)

Probably it will improve with time and the gain in experience of the developpers; remember that for most of them it is the first time they experience that world of bidirectionality at the widget level (and even at the whole desktop level, in fact)

I'll definitely need that. I believe we should put some time for defining a standard behavior and implementing it. Would you consider creating a list of existing problems?

There is/was a document somewhere on the internet describing all the things needed for a real arabized system, far beyond the mere ability to just be able to display bidi text.

I've however forgot the title name of such document and so can't find it again.

What I remember however is that the whole desktop paradigm, everything visible on screen, should follow the right-to-left rule, as that is
how people using those languages is accostumed to do eye-motion (even when
looking at a non-textual picture for example; or so I've been told);
that includes placement of buttons in title bars, icons on the background
of the desktop, the placement of menus and icons in the menu/toolbars, cursor bieng on the right by default on text input fields etc.

there may be some exceptions, for example the input field for url addresses
of a web browser should be better in ltr by default; that however should
be investigated trough experience, as until now no complete rtl-supporting
system has ever been used on a large scale, or has it ?

Thanks
