Bram (vim's author) has declared 6.1 a bug fix release and said he will not
look seriously at our code until 6.1 ships (don't know when that is, he's
on patch 160+ and going); forking at this point is really not something
I personally would entertain or recommend since it would do more damage than
good.
As for Akka. My opinion - release the thing on freshmeat ASAP to get more
of an audience - you don't want a stalled project.
PS. make sure your xterm (or whatever you use to create email) is no wider
than 80-char (it makes it lots easier to read your posts instead of
have 2-3 words always spill), just a suggestion.
