Salam all,

Hey Arafat:

The current locales that are installed on the system are en_UTF-8. You can find out what locale the system has by looking at

/etc/locale.gen.

Yeah I figured that out soon as I sent out the last message ;)

If you wish to use more locale, we can generate them and have them on the system. If you want any added. tell me and I will do it for ya.

Thanks anmar. So I guess the next step is to generate locales and create templates we can agree on. For now you can see a real simple sample at

http://www.arabeyes.org/~amohamed/potest/utf.php

This uses gettext and the en_US.UTF-8 encoding.

If we go this route with the internationalized site, we're gonna need some extensive redesign and rewrites.

Salam all,

I figured out why I couldn't get the translated pages to work. I'm running Debian and I finally came across a posting stating that I needed to run 'dpkg-reconfigure locales' in order to generate locales I need to use, e.g. ar_SA, en_US, fr_FR.

The reason I couldn't work it initially was that I was testing 'en' and 'fr_FR' neither of which I had configured on my system.

So, I guess this email has two parts.

One, I feel comfortable enough with gettext to start creating test pages on arabeyes.

Two, anyone here understand what exactly dpkg-reconfigure locales does? Since we're running debian on arabeyes.org, I need to find out what locales have been configured and who would be able to configure additional locales as we need them.
