Anything as long as they are done daily/nightly even if it's via python ;-)

It would be far simpler to,

 - tar cvf backup_20040201.tar .
 - gzip/bzip2 backup_20040201.tar
 - gpg -encrypt backup_20040201.tar.bz2

then to go fish and exclude files selectively (or encrypt 'em) stand-alone.

Just a suggestion; whatever works and gets done the soonest.
